If Trump’s Muslim Registry Is Enacted, I’ll Convert To Islam

I will convert to Islam if a Muslim registry passes legislation.

That’s a pretty inflammatory statement when taken by itself, but when placed into the context of protecting my fellow American citizens through the obstruction of a nefarious and quite certainly un-American law, it seems a little more reasonable. My people are troubled, they are afraid, and they are quite sick of being lied to and trod upon by the richest and most powerful Americans. My people are also divided and filled with vitriol towards each other. The left have become cannibals consumed with pointing fingers and assigning blame when, truth be told, every one of us knows who we have to thank for a Donald Trump presidency. The dirty Dems and their rigged primary gave us a candidate unpalatable to many and untrusted by most while seemingly learning nothing at all in the process.

That being said, onto a favorite saying of mine: It is what it is. Trump will be president and there is nothing anyone can do about it so we might as well make the best of it. I am no Trumper, I voted my conscience and went Green, but DT was always the lesser of two evils in my mind because of two things.

1. TPP: HRC wouldn’t come out for or against it and I am pretty sure which side of that issue she would have come down on. The same side as the money in her charity and campaign was on…

2. No-fly zone in Syria: I am no foreign policy expert but it seems pretty likely the outcome of such a unilateral move would have ended up in a WW3 level confrontation with Russia, China, and North Korea all of which have nuclear weapons, not a pretty picture.

Trump as the lesser of two evils because he opposed both of these things.

We are seeing DT break campaign promises to his base as the Democrats have done to us and I am feeling oddly consoled by that fact, feeling the beginning of a little optimism that DT may not be the second coming of Hitler, as the obviously biased “liberal” media has indicated he would be. Trump is an unknown variable in the calculus of our political climate and no person can say what he will or will not do but himself, as I really don’t see him seeking the advice of anybody regardless of how out of his depth he may be. Let’s not worry about the unknowable when we have some things in front of us that we can focus on, DT’s 100-day plan.

Vast amounts of this plan are as regressive and devolved as one would expect, but there are elements we will need to support vigorously as Progressives because there are progressive policies hidden in there such as; term limits, 5-year ban of congressional or white house officials becoming lobbyists after leaving office, a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of foreign governments, a complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections, and his intention to renegotiate NAFTA or withdraw from the deal under Article 2205. These things he will not be able to push through alone, especially the anti-corruption, anti-establishment items will require support from the badly divided left to make real.

So hero Donald? Probably not, unfortunately. We must hope for the best as we simultaneously prepare for the worst. Pence is just plain scary crazy and if he gets the Donald’s ear many horrible things could lay right over the horizon. I won’t speculate on that here because I intend this to be a message of hope to the forlorn, but also a reminder that while we must work with DT on policies we support, we must also remain vigilant against the regressive racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and xenophobic ideology that has been present throughout his campaign. I will willingly place myself between the most vulnerable of our people and the authoritarian forces that mean them harm. Brothers and sisters, can you in good conscience not do the same?
